What other sources quote for Poland (as published on 7 October 2026):

Source Quoted price What it covers
A UK medical travel agency (price research, July 2026) about £4,000–£8,000 Private hospital, total knee replacement
An international clinic marketplace from $8,700 Clinic listings
A UK agency selling inclusive packages from £10,290 All-inclusive 14-day hospital package

The spread is wide because the quotes are not for the same thing. A figure at the low end may leave out the implant, the anaesthetist or physiotherapy; a figure at the high end may include two weeks of inpatient rehabilitation. Compare what is included, line by line, before you compare the totals.

What the price includes — and what it does not

Included in the hospital's knee replacement package:

  • pre-operative diagnostics
  • general anaesthesia
  • the operation and the implant
  • three days on the hospital ward
  • up to seven post-operative outpatient physiotherapy sessions
  • a patient coordinator
  • a post-operative consultation with your rehabilitation plan

Not included:

  • flights
  • hotel accommodation, for you after discharge and for anyone travelling with you
  • a private room (available at extra cost)

The hospital has its own MRI and CT imaging and a rehabilitation department, and its international coordinators speak English, Polish, German and Arabic.

Ask for the quote in writing. It should name the surgeon, the implant model and everything listed above, and it stays valid for 90 days.

Poland compared with a private knee replacement in the UK

UK private hospital groups Partner hospital in Poland
Total knee replacement £13,020–£16,914 (published prices, checked 22 September 2026) €8,620, about £7,420
First consultation £95 to £204 extra Ask for it to be itemised in your written quote
Physiotherapy after discharge Varies by package Up to seven outpatient sessions included
Travel Local Flights and hotel on top

On published figures the hospital price is around £5,600 below the lowest UK group price. Flights and a hotel for you and a companion reduce that gap, so add them before you decide.

Poland is not the only lower-cost option in Europe, and the price difference between Poland and Lithuania for a knee is small. Our guide to knee replacement prices by country sets the figures side by side.

How the trip works

  1. Assessment and consultation. You complete a short assessment and share your medical history and any X-rays or MRI you have. Whether surgery is appropriate, and which operation, is confirmed in consultation with the surgeon.
  2. Written quote and date. The surgery date is set after that consultation, because it depends on your case and the surgeon's review.
  3. Deposit. A 20% deposit secures the date and is paid directly to the hospital — not to OrthoVoyage.
  4. Travel. Direct flights run from London to Wrocław, about two hours. A private transfer takes you to the hospital, roughly an hour and a half by road.
  5. Surgery and hospital stay. Three days on the ward.
  6. Recovery nearby. Outpatient physiotherapy sessions follow discharge, while you stay in a hotel close to the hospital.
  7. Flying home. There is no fixed day. Your surgeon clears you to fly based on how you are recovering.
  8. Back in the UK. You return with your medical records in English, the implant details and a rehabilitation plan for your GP and physiotherapist.

How to check a hospital in Poland before you pay

Poland is an EU member state, so private hospitals work under EU rules on medical devices and patient rights. That is a baseline, not a guarantee about any single hospital. Before paying a deposit, get these in writing:

  • the hospital's registered name and address, so you can look it up yourself
  • the surgeon's name and how many knee replacements they perform a year
  • the implant manufacturer and model
  • what happens, and who pays, if you need an extra night or a further procedure
  • who you contact after you are home, and how

The NHS publishes a checklist for anyone considering treatment abroad, and it is worth reading in full. It also advises telling your GP about your plans before you travel.

Surgery abroad carries the same surgical risks as surgery at home, plus the practical ones: a journey soon after an operation, and follow-up split between two countries. Our guides on safety and on flying after a joint replacement cover both.

Who this suits, and who it does not

Travelling for a knee replacement tends to suit people who are otherwise well, can travel with a companion, and are paying for themselves because the NHS wait is long or the UK private price is out of reach.

It is a poor fit if you have complex medical conditions that need close coordination with your UK specialists, if you cannot stay near the hospital for the physiotherapy period, or if you have nobody to help you on the journey home. A surgeon who has reviewed your case should tell you plainly if that applies.
