Why UK patients look at Poland
- Price. Running a hospital costs less in Poland than in the UK. The implant brands and the EU regulatory framework are the same ones UK private hospitals work with.
- Distance. About two hours by direct flight from London to Wrocław, then a private transfer.
- Fixed prices. The price list is published in euros, and your written quote is valid for 90 days.
- Language. The hospital's international coordinators speak English, Polish, German and Arabic.
- Timing. The surgery date is set after your consultation with the surgeon, because it depends on your case.
Poland is not the only lower-cost option. Our surgery abroad section compares it with Lithuania, Turkey and other destinations.
How the process works
- Assessment. A short online assessment, then you share your medical history and any scans you have.
- Consultation. Whether surgery is appropriate, and which operation, is confirmed in consultation with the surgeon.
- Written quote. It names the surgeon, the implant where relevant, and what is and is not included.
- Deposit. 20%, paid directly to the hospital by bank transfer or its secure payment link — not to OrthoVoyage.
- Travel. Flight to Wrocław and a private transfer to Jelenia Góra.
- Surgery and recovery. Hospital stay, then physiotherapy while you stay nearby.
- Home. You fly when your surgeon clears you, with your records in English and a rehabilitation plan for your GP and physiotherapist.
OrthoVoyage coordinates the trip from the first call to the flight home. We are a medical travel concierge, not a hospital, and we do not give medical advice.
What to check before you pay
Poland is an EU member state, so private hospitals work under EU rules on medical devices and patient rights. That is a baseline, not a guarantee about any single hospital. Get these in writing first:
- the hospital's registered name and address
- the surgeon's name and how many of these operations they perform a year
- the implant manufacturer and model, for joint replacements
- what happens, and who pays, if you need an extra night or a further procedure
- who you contact once you are home
The NHS treatment abroad checklist is worth reading in full, and it advises telling your GP before you travel.
The NHS does not fund treatment at a private hospital abroad, and most UK health insurance excludes overseas treatment, so this is a self-funded route.
