What a UK private knee replacement price usually includes

Fixed-price ("package") prices at UK private hospitals normally cover:

  • the operation itself and the implant
  • the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees
  • your hospital stay, usually in a private room
  • follow-up appointments and a course of physiotherapy (in most packages)

What they usually don't include:

  • your first consultation with the surgeon — from about £200 at Circle, and typically £250–£350 elsewhere
  • scans and tests needed to decide whether you need surgery (X-rays, MRI)
  • extra nights if your recovery is slower than planned, unless the package says otherwise

So the realistic total is the package price plus a few hundred pounds before you are even booked in. Always ask for the full list of exclusions in writing.

Why prices vary so much

The same operation can differ by several thousand pounds depending on:

  • Location. London and the South East are usually the most expensive.
  • Type of replacement. A partial (unicompartmental) knee is not always cheaper than a total knee.
  • Implant. Cementless, "anti-allergy" (nickel-free) or premium designs cost more.
  • Technique. Robot-assisted surgery is often priced higher.
  • Your health. A higher anaesthetic risk or other conditions can mean a longer stay and a higher quote.
  • The surgeon. Some consultants set their own fees on top of the hospital's package.

Because of this, the only price that matters is your written quote. Compare quotes line by line, not headline figures.

Prices also move inside a single group: Circle Health Group advertises a national price from £13,020, while a competitor's published comparison puts Circle Bath at £15,985 for the same operation. We list what each one publishes in private knee replacement cost by hospital group.

Paying with insurance or finance

If you have private medical insurance, check whether knee replacement is covered and what your excess is — joint problems that started before you took out the policy are often excluded.

Many UK hospital groups offer 0% or low-interest finance for self-pay patients. Read the total amount repayable, not just the monthly figure.

The NHS alternative: free, but how long?

On the NHS, a knee replacement costs you nothing — but you may wait a long time. At the end of August 2026, 843,419 trauma and orthopaedic pathways were waiting to start treatment in England — the largest waiting list of any specialty — and only 61.1% had been waiting less than 18 weeks, against an NHS standard of 92%.

Waiting times vary widely between hospitals. Our guide to NHS hip and knee replacement waiting times explains how to check your local wait and what rights you have to move hospital.

Knee replacement abroad: what it costs in Poland

A growing number of UK patients self-fund surgery in another European country instead of paying UK private prices. Our partner is a private surgical hospital in Jelenia Góra, south-west Poland, operating under EU medical regulation for around 20 years.

Procedure Partner hospital price (July 2026) ≈ in pounds
Total knee replacement, cemented €8,620 £7,420
Total knee replacement, DePuy Attune €8,880 £7,640
Total knee replacement, cementless €9,140 £7,870
Nickel-free ("anti-allergic") knee €10,190 £8,770
Partial knee replacement €7,570 £6,520

Included in the knee package: pre-operative diagnostics, general anaesthesia, the operation and implant (Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes or Enovis LIMA), three days on the hospital ward, up to seven outpatient physiotherapy sessions after discharge, a hospital patient coordinator and a post-operative consultation with your rehabilitation plan.

Not included: flights, hotel, and a private room (available at extra cost). Prices are billed in euros, so the sterling figure moves with the exchange rate.

Compared with a UK package from about £13,020, the hospital price is around £5,600 lower before travel. The hospital name, your surgeon and the exact implant are named in your written plan before you pay anything.

Working out the true cost of going abroad

The operation is the big number, but plan for the whole trip:

Cost item Who arranges it Notes
Surgery package Hospital Fixed price in euros, confirmed in your quote (valid 90 days)
Flights You / your coordinator Direct flights London Luton → Wrocław, about 2 hours
Transfer to the hospital Your coordinator Road transfer from Wrocław airport
Hotel after discharge You / your coordinator You attend outpatient physio after leaving the ward
Companion's travel and hotel You Optional but recommended
Private room Hospital Optional extra

A 20% deposit secures your date and is paid directly to the hospital. If you cancel for an important reason at least 72 hours before surgery, the deposit is refunded within 14 days.

Questions to ask before you accept any quote

Whether you choose a UK hospital or one abroad, get written answers to these:

  1. What exactly is included — and what is not?
  2. Which implant will be used (brand and model)?
  3. How many nights in hospital, and in what kind of room?
  4. How much physiotherapy is included after discharge?
  5. Who is responsible for my care if there is a complication, and what does that cost?
  6. How long is the quote valid, and what happens if I need to cancel?
  7. What records will I take home for my GP?

Frequently asked questions

How much is a private knee replacement in the UK in 2026?

Most self-pay total knee replacements cost between about £11,000 and £20,000, and fixed-price packages from the large hospital groups start at around £13,000. The first consultation and pre-operative scans are usually charged separately.

Is a partial knee replacement cheaper than a total knee replacement?

Not always. UK self-pay prices for partial knee replacement fall roughly between £12,300 and £14,800 — similar to many total knee packages. At our partner hospital in Poland, a partial knee replacement starts from €7,570 (about £6,520).

Why is knee replacement cheaper in Poland?

Because running a hospital costs less — staff, buildings and overheads — not because the medicine is different. The implant brands (Zimmer Biomet, DePuy Synthes, Stryker, Enovis LIMA) are the same ones used in UK hospitals, and the hospital operates under EU medical regulation.

Can I get the NHS to pay for a private knee replacement abroad?

Generally not. Since Brexit, the EU Cross-Border Healthcare Directive no longer applies to UK residents, so the NHS does not reimburse private treatment abroad. Some private health insurance policies do cover treatment abroad — check with your provider.
