Private Knee Replacement Prices by Hospital Group (2026): Spire, Nuffield, Circle, Ramsay, Practice Plus

The large UK hospital groups all publish self-pay knee replacement prices, and they differ by more than £3,000 — before you count the consultation and scans. This guide puts the published figures side by side, shows what each package actually covers, and explains why two hospitals in the same group can quote very different prices.

Published prices, side by side

Provider Knee replacement Initial consultation
Circle Health Group from £13,020 from £200
Practice Plus Group £13,799 £95
Ramsay Health Care (Woodthorpe Hospital) from £15,435 quoted separately
Spire Healthcare (Washington Hospital) from £15,853 £204
Nuffield Health £16,914 (guide) from £200

All figures are from each provider's own website, checked 22 September 2026. Ramsay and Spire publish prices per hospital, so the figures above are examples, not national rates.

For context, industry data (LaingBuisson, collected May 2025) puts the national self-pay range at £11,195–£19,740 — which matches what the groups publish.

Why the same group quotes different prices

Look at what Practice Plus Group published in its own June 2026 comparison of four hospitals in the South West:

Practice Plus, Emersons Green Spire, Bristol Circle, Bath Nuffield, Taunton
Knee replacement £13,799 £15,418 £15,985 £14,995
Hip replacement £13,199 £15,246 £15,596 £14,995

Circle Bath at £15,985 sits almost £3,000 above Circle's national "from £13,020". Neither number is wrong: "from" prices are the cheapest case at the cheapest site, and the price you are quoted depends on the hospital, the consultant's fee and the implant.

(That table is a competitor's published comparison, so treat it as a starting point and check the hospital's own page.)

The practical rule: a group's headline price tells you very little. Ask your nearest two or three hospitals for a written quote for your case.

What each package includes

The packages are similar in shape but differ in the details that cost money:

  • Practice Plus Group — pre-operative assessment, surgery, hospital stay, prescriptions, equipment and follow-up appointments including physiotherapy. Diagnostic tests ordered after your consultation are charged separately.
  • Spire Healthcare — pre-assessment tests, consultant and anaesthetist fees, nursing care, medication and food during your stay, and a standard prosthesis. Aftercare covers follow-ups, a stated number of physiotherapy visits, stitch removal, dressings and medication for up to 14 days after discharge; some home aids are not included.
  • Nuffield Health — pre-assessment, main treatment and post-discharge care. The published figure is a guide: you get a fixed all-inclusive price after your consultation, and it can change with consultant fees, the prosthesis, drugs and any pre-existing conditions.
  • Circle Health Group — surgery, consultant and anaesthetist fees, hospital fees, a private room and aftercare including follow-ups and physiotherapy. The first consultation and diagnostic scans are extra.
  • Ramsay Health Care — prices are published per hospital and per implant type, with finance options shown alongside (0% over 10 months, or 14.9% APR over 60 months).

Two things to confirm in writing: how many physiotherapy sessions are included, and what happens — and what it costs — if you need to stay an extra night.

The consultation and scans nobody counts

Every headline price above excludes the first consultation, and most exclude the imaging needed to decide whether you need surgery at all.

  • Practice Plus Group: £95
  • Circle Health Group: from £200
  • Nuffield Health: from £200
  • Spire Healthcare: £204 (Washington)

Add an MRI or X-ray and you are typically several hundred pounds in before anyone has quoted you for an operation. When you compare two providers, compare the total: consultation + diagnostics + the surgery package.

How this compares with surgery abroad

Knee replacement
Cheapest published UK group price from £13,020 (Circle)
Most expensive published UK group price £16,914 (Nuffield)
Partner hospital, Poland €8,620 ≈ £7,420

The Polish price includes pre-operative diagnostics, general anaesthesia, the operation and implant, three nights on the ward and up to seven outpatient physiotherapy sessions. Flights, hotel and a private room are extra, so add your travel costs before comparing.

Questions to ask when you request a quote

  1. Is this a fixed price, or a guide price that changes after consultation?
  2. What is the consultant's fee, and is it inside the package?
  3. Which implant is included, and what does an upgrade cost?
  4. How many physiotherapy sessions are included after discharge?
  5. What happens if I need an extra night in hospital?
  6. What is not included — scans, home aids, medication beyond 14 days?
  7. If a complication needs a second operation, who pays?

Frequently asked questions

Which UK hospital group is cheapest for a knee replacement?

On published national figures, Circle Health Group (from £13,020) and Practice Plus Group (£13,799) are the lowest, and Nuffield Health the highest at £16,914. But prices differ between hospitals in the same group, so get written quotes from the hospitals near you.

Why is Nuffield Health more expensive than Practice Plus?

Nuffield publishes a guide price covering pre-assessment, treatment and post-discharge care, confirmed as a fixed price after consultation, while Practice Plus publishes a single fixed figure. Differences in consultant fees, implants, room type and included physiotherapy explain most of the gap.

Is the consultation included in the price?

Almost never. Practice Plus charges £95, Circle and Nuffield from £200, and Spire £204 at its Washington hospital. Diagnostic scans ordered after that consultation are usually extra too.

How much cheaper is a knee replacement abroad?

At OrthoVoyage's partner hospital in Poland a cemented total knee replacement is €8,620 (about £7,420) including the implant, three days in hospital and up to seven physiotherapy sessions — roughly £5,600 below the cheapest published UK group price, before travel costs.
