Is it worth travelling for a keyhole operation?

For a hip or knee replacement the saving is several thousand pounds, and travel is a small part of it. For an arthroscopy the saving is smaller, so do the sum first:

  • hospital price in Poland
  • return flights for you, and for a companion if you bring one
  • hotel nights
  • physiotherapy at home afterwards

Set that against a written quote from a UK hospital near you. If the difference is a few hundred pounds, having the operation close to home is usually the simpler choice.

Travelling makes more sense when the arthroscopy is combined with another procedure, or when the UK quotes you have received are well above the published prices.

What an arthroscopy can and cannot do

Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery: a camera and fine instruments are passed through small cuts to look inside the joint and treat problems such as a torn meniscus.

It is not a treatment for arthritis in general. Whether keyhole surgery will help your knee is a medical decision for the surgeon who examines you and reviews your scans — and a good surgeon will tell you if it will not.
