What a UK quote usually includes — and what it leaves out

A UK package price normally covers the hospital stay, the operation, the surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees and, for a joint replacement, the implant. Three things are often outside it:

  • The first consultation and scans. An MRI or X-ray before surgery is usually billed separately.
  • Physiotherapy after discharge. Some packages include a set number of sessions; many charge per session.
  • Follow-up beyond the first review. Check how many post-operative appointments are in the price.

When going abroad makes sense — and when it doesn't

The saving grows with the size of the operation.

  • Knee replacement, partial or total. The difference is about £5,600–£9,500 against UK self-pay prices. After flights and a hotel for a companion, most of that saving remains. The Polish package includes the implant, three days in hospital and up to seven physiotherapy sessions.
  • ACL reconstruction. About £3,400 cheaper before travel. Rehabilitation lasts months and happens at home, so plan a UK physiotherapist in advance.
  • Arthroscopy or meniscus repair. About £3,000–£3,400 cheaper before travel. For a short day-case operation, flights and a few nights' stay take a bigger share of the saving; it still usually pays, but check the numbers for your dates.

If you are on an NHS waiting list, check where you stand first: trauma and orthopaedics had 843,419 open pathways at the end of August 2026, with 61.1% treated within 18 weeks. How to check your own waiting time.
