The short answer

Typical self-pay price
Total hip replacement, UK private — average about £14,400 – £14,500

Total hip replacement, partner hospital in Poland from €6,940 (≈ £5,970)

The UK averages are published by Circle Health Group (about £14,500) and Practice Plus Group (about £14,412). The Poland figure is our partner hospital's orthopaedic price list (July 2026), converted at €1 = £0.86.

How much does a hip replacement cost privately?

Across the large UK providers the published self-pay price for a total hip replacement runs from about £12,750 to £16,579:

Provider Published price
Circle Health Group from £12,750
Practice Plus Group £13,199
Ramsay Health Care (Woodthorpe) cemented from £14,884
Nuffield Health from £16,579 (guide price)

Circle Health Group puts the national average at about £14,500. A hip operation cost quoted as a package normally covers the hospital stay, theatre, implant and the aftercare each provider lists — but what counts as "included" differs, and so does the hospital you are sent to inside the same group. There is a provider-by-provider breakdown in private hip replacement cost by hospital group.

Hip replacement cost in the UK: what you actually pay

The package price is rarely the whole bill. Add:

  • The first consultation — £95 at Practice Plus Group, from £200 at Circle Health Group and Nuffield Health.
  • Scans and pre-operative tests — included by some providers, charged separately by others.
  • The implant you need — at Ramsay's Woodthorpe Hospital cemented, uncemented and ceramic hips differ by about £1,670 for the same operation.

So a hip replacement surgery cost advertised "from £12,750" can land closer to £14,000–£16,500 once the consultation, imaging and your implant are counted. Ask for the quote in writing and check it line by line against what each hospital group's package includes.

What's included in a UK private hip replacement price

A UK fixed-price hip package normally covers the operation and implant, surgeon's and anaesthetist's fees, your hospital stay (usually a private room) and aftercare such as follow-up appointments and physiotherapy.

Usually charged separately:

  • the first consultation — from about £200 at Circle Health Group
  • tests and scans used to decide whether you need surgery
  • anything the package excludes in its small print, such as extra nights

Ask for the exclusions list before you compare prices — two "from" prices can hide very different totals.

Why hip replacement prices differ

  • Implant and bearing. Cemented, cementless, ceramic and dual-mobility hips are priced differently.
  • Location. London hospitals are generally the most expensive.
  • Complexity. Revision surgery (replacing an old hip) costs far more than a first replacement.
  • Your health. Other conditions can mean a longer stay or extra anaesthetic support.
  • Surgeon's fees. Some consultants charge on top of the hospital's package.

Hip replacement on the NHS

An NHS hip replacement is free, but orthopaedics has the longest waiting list of any specialty in England: 843,419 trauma and orthopaedic pathways were waiting to start treatment at the end of August 2026, and only 61.1% of them had been waiting less than 18 weeks.

See our guide to NHS hip and knee replacement waiting times for how to check the wait at your hospital and your right to ask to be moved.

Hip replacement in Poland: prices

Our partner is a private surgical hospital in Jelenia Góra, south-west Poland, with its own MRI and CT imaging and a rehabilitation department.

Hip replacement type Partner hospital price (July 2026) ≈ in pounds
Total hip, cemented €6,940 £5,970
Total hip, cementless €7,470 £6,430
Ceramic / anti-allergic €7,990 £6,880

Included: general anaesthesia, the operation and implant (Zimmer Biomet, Stryker, DePuy Synthes or Enovis LIMA), three days on the hospital ward, up to seven outpatient physiotherapy sessions after discharge, a hospital patient coordinator and a post-operative consultation with your rehabilitation plan. Pre-operative diagnostics are confirmed individually.

Not included: flights, hotel and a private room (available at extra cost).

Against a UK package from about £12,750, the cemented hip price is around £6,780 lower before travel costs. Your surgeon recommends the implant at consultation, and the hospital name, surgeon and implant model are in your written plan before you pay anything.

Planning the trip

  • Getting there: direct flights from London Luton to Wrocław take about two hours, followed by a road transfer to the hospital.
  • How long to stay: three nights on the ward, then outpatient physiotherapy sessions — so plan to stay nearby after discharge. Your surgeon decides when you are fit to fly home.
  • Paying: a 20% deposit, paid directly to the hospital, secures your date; the balance is due at least two working days before surgery or on admission. Quotes are valid for 90 days.
  • Coming home: you leave with your medical records in English for your GP and a written rehabilitation plan.
